I never paid much attention to Buddhism until recently. I also labelled it obsolete, like Christianity, Scientology, Mormonism and those other belief systems that stem from books printed thousands of years ago that were never updated. But I've started noticing a surprising trend in the internet community. Buddhism is gaining a following at a rapid pace. As a regular reader of tech sites like Reddit.com, and Digg.com - I'm often surprised at the number of articles and links related to Buddhism that are submitted by regular users. What makes this even more interesting is that these sites are used by "early-adopters" - alpha-geeks who flock to the newest, latest technologies on the Internet. I'm talking future Bill Gates, Larry Pages and Steve Jobs. These people tend to be logical, left-brained, highly intelligent technologist, entrepreneurs, writers and creatives types. There are the men and women that are shaping technology and with it - our future. Peering into Reddit.com is like getting a snapshot into their heads. You notice trends - they tend to be anti-Bush, pro-Apple, anti-Microsoft. They love their iPods and soak into sites on Web 2.0, Ajax, CSS and other cool new technologies. They dislike Republicans, are ardent Liberals, love the Daily show and absolutely dig Lego. But then you notice other trends. And here's where it gets interesting. Articles that are favourable to Buddhism rapidly rise up to the top ranks on Reddit. Articles that are un-favourable to Islam also rapidly rise up to the top ranks. (for the records, the articles unfavorable to Islam tend to criticize the politics of the Arab world not the spirituality of the religion). If these geeks are the inventors of the future - can we conclude that Buddhism will experience a resurgence in coming years? Based on what I've read so far. I beleive so. Here's today's article on Buddhism - found on Reddit.com. Read this and you'll instantly see why Buddhism has so much appeal to Geek community. What Not to Beleive And this article, found on Blinklist.com - is perhaps the single best article I've read on Buddhism. Anti-Buddhism Arguments What do you think?

Reddit doesn't even cover close to 5% of the geek community. I would really encourage you to look beyond reddit and beyond buddhism...2/28/2006 10:50:25 AM|W|P|Anonymous|W|P|really nice graphics on yore header!

To Vishen: I don't like religion as an institution, no matter which faith you are talking about. I like the pure form of spirituality though :)3/02/2006 07:03:35 AM|W|P|khailee|W|P|i noticed those who prefer to think and decide for themselves tend to enjoy buddhism. i am not surprised geeks like it too.

however, the room it leaves for interpretation leaves room for misinterpretation as well...

i initially thought buddhism was about deities and joss sticks (popular malaysian mix-up), of course, till i stumbled upon an essay comparing existentialist and buddhist philosophy3/02/2006 08:09:32 AM|W|P|Vishen|W|P|Hi Abs - perhaps you're right and 5% is small. But the obervation is significant. And you'll see it on Digg.com and other social news sites as well.

I'm not into Buddhism because I refuse to limit myself by embracing any ONE religion. I prefer tearing apart dogma and forming my own opinions based on self-experience.3/02/2006 09:20:45 PM|W|P|khailee|W|P|i always felt truth should not be monopolized, especially when truth depends on what we want to believe...3/04/2006 08:24:59 PM|W|P|srid|W|P|oh yeah, those two links were submitted by me! And I'm a geek. :-)3/05/2006 05:29:03 PM|W|P|Buddy|W|P|Hi,

I think Buddhism has much to offer the world, especially the western world.

I am not a Buddhist, but I do study meditation, and I have read a few books written by Buddhists.

The Buddhist precept common in these books has to do with compassion for others -- developed only after discovering and engendering it for oneself.

In other words, by acknowledging, understanding and offering compassion for our own weaknesses, perceived faults, etc., we can then develop a greater, truer capacity for feeling the suffering of others.

Compassion for oneself is a radical concept in western culture, especially America, where we are taught and conditioned to direct our compassion only to the less fortunate. Kindness to others is a good thing, but to truly embrace it, one must allow kindness to enter their own heart.

I think that there are a lot of people today suffering with themselves. And Buddhism's message that we are all precious, and that we all deserve compassion...especially from ourselves...can help alleviate that suffering.4/14/2006 05:34:47 AM|W|P|kaY|W|P|I flip thru the bible, in the old testiment, it tells you this and that, questioning the logic is not encouraged. haven't read thru the Quran though.

Come across a bit of Buddhism and Zen, read a lot of Osho and Krishnamurti. My conclusion: whether its christian, catholic or Islam doesnt matter anymore, everything is just some idea in the mind.9/24/2006 10:54:22 PM|W|P|Anonymous|W|P|Well done!

I took this shot in Sarajevo in 1997. It was part of a series of photographs called 24 Hours in Sarajevo that was exhibited at the University of Michigan that year. I was stuck in Sarajevo for 24 hours in July 1997. My goal was to show the faces of a city that had just come out of war - with just 1 roll of film, I had to make every picture count. Each picture was also exhibited with a quote by a Bosnian writer or a reporter or politician talking about the Balkan War. Here's my favourite piece, taken in Black White with a Canon EOS 888. The red ball was photoshopped in. I was trying to symbolize the bloodied earth these Bosnian kids had inherited - yeah, I know..."deep" right? Ah, that July day 1997 was perhaps the single most memorable day of my life.
Childhood

I will try to get through all this,….hoping that it all will pass and ….that I will be a child again, living my childhood in peace.

I encourage everyone to read this article. For the record: I agree with the views expressed by the editor - this was not an act of prejudice or anti-Islamic caricature. The fundamentalist reaction, on the other hand, was pure stupidity and has done irreparable harm to the world's view of Islam. I hope this article gets wide media coverage worldwide.

Few events of the last year have irked me as much as the current paranoia sweeping the Muslim world over a series of political cartoons. I have great respect for historical figures like Christ and Muhammad. But I have little respect for the religious institutions built around their teachings. If you can understand this dichotomy - congratulations - you've escaped the shackles that religion places on the rational human mind. Christ and the Catholic Church are two distince entities. One, a great man and spirtual being. The other, an obsolete political organization that needs to reform or die out. The same applies to Muhammad and the uneducated Imams that represent most of the Arab-Muslim world. Religion is nothing more than spirituality, mixed in with a little bit of political, man-made dogma. Take away the dogma - the silly ideas about sacred cows, head coverings, birth-control, and intolerance towards people with different faiths, and all the world's religions share a common spiritual core - that humankind is part of a greater universal force. Call this Allah, Yahweh, Brahma, the Jungian Morphogenetic Field, Higher Intelligence or Cosmic Intelligence. It does not matter. It's the same thing. The idiots now burning Danish flags don't get this. Muhammad, the man who was so modest that he declared his burial place should remain secret lest people worship him over God, would not want Muslims burning Danish flags to protect his image. In doing so, they have only drifted away from God. If I could close my eyes and wish for Religion to dissapear from the earth and be replaced with a common spirituality I would do so in an instant. Religion is obsolete. And nothing takes us further from God, Spirituality and Peace then that mental parasite called Organized Religion. I was raised as a Hindu, live in a Muslim country and married a Christian. And in the process I realized how dangerous and useless religion is. I stopped calling myself a Hindu in 2002 and instead decided to explore spirituality through meditation and study - and not by reading obsolete thousand year old texts. I'm waiting for the rest of the World to stop calling themselves Muslims, Christians, Hindus and those other silly labels.

Yes people do use religion with ill intention but please don't condemn the entire Arab-Muslim world based on the actions of a few dumb 'Imams' and embassy-burners. Most of this 'world' is sitting and watching peacefully and do live quite nicely according to the teachings of our religion. There must be some good in religion if most people immersed in it do no harm.2/07/2006 02:51:00 AM|W|P|Vishen|W|P|
I've started getting my daily news and blog posts directly from Web 2.0 sites like Reddit, Digg and BlinkList. These sites offer a new, democratic way of discovering news and interesting sites on the web. Members post stories and other members vote the most interesting stories into prominance. Because what makes the "front page" is member selected and not computer generated, I find these sites to be far superior then Findory or Google News. In fact I've completely stopped reading Google News, BBC or CNN since. Digg.com is by far the most popular and focuses on Technology News. Reddit.com has a smaller user base but a wider scope of news. I prefer Reddit over Digg because Reddit also includes articles on Sociology and Politics. BlinkList.com (which is created by my company, MindValley) is a social bookmarking service but recently has implemented interesting tools for discovery. Blinklist has a smaller user base then Digg but has a wider category base and gets 10,000 articles added daily in almost every category. My favourite BlinkList sections are: Humor Ecommerce Tactics Politics NomadLife Check them out for yourself and let me know what you think.
